Chadoula: the legend of the Rock in the Aegean !!

...As you arrive at the port of Skopelos from the west, your eye is inevitably drawn to a large rock rising from the sea, directly in front of the castle. Locals call it Chadoula — a rock wrapped in legend and sorrow.

The story takes us back to the year 1660. At that time, a wealthy merchant lived on the island, owner of many ships that sailed across the Mediterranean. His mansion was the largest and richest in Skopelos, filled with gold, silk, and precious treasures.

The merchant had a daughter named Chadoula, renowned for her beauty. Raised in luxury, she lived like a noblewoman. Many young men admired her, but her heart belonged to a nobleman from Glossa, in northern Skopelos.

When the young man asked for Chadoula’s hand in marriage, her father gladly gave his blessing, and soon the couple was engaged. Their happiness, however, was short-lived.

A Turkish admiral, Morosini, was preparing to attack the island. As they had done many times before, the people of Skopelos rose to defend their land. Among the brave men who set sail was Chadoula’s beloved.

Before leaving, he made her a promise: if he returned victorious, she would see him first. If he fell in battle, the ships would return flying black sails.

Day after day, Chadoula waited anxiously. She climbed to the castle and gazed out to sea, hoping for a sign. One morning, she saw the ships approaching with black sails raised. Her world collapsed.

Overcome with grief, she leapt into the deep waters below the castle. Legend says that as her body touched the sea, it turned to stone, becoming the rock that still stands there today.

Cruel fate had the final word: the young nobleman was alive. In his joy at returning and seeing Chadoula again, he forgot to raise the white sails of victory.
