Antonis Ampelakias, born in 1976 on the island of Skopelos, is among the contemporary craftsmen who keep the tradition of Skopelian knife-making alive.
His involvement in the craft began through his apprenticeship with Christos Patsís, the last representative of the island’s older generation of knife makers. Under his guidance, he learned the secrets of the trade, the technical details, and the philosophy behind the creation of an authentic Skopelian knife.
His work includes both functional and decorative knives, all deeply influenced by local tradition. They are based on techniques developed in Skopelos over generations, while also reflecting his own personal approach.
Although he places absolute priority on functionality, proper balance, and ergonomics—ensuring that each knife performs its intended purpose flawlessly—he also pays close attention to aesthetic refinement, striving to achieve a harmonious blend of practicality and artistic expression.
For his creations, he uses high-quality materials such as recycled steel as well as commercially available high-grade steel. For the handles, he selects natural materials including goat, ram, and buck horn, along with bovine bone, giving each piece a distinctive character.
The knife sheaths are crafted from wood sourced from the natural landscape of Skopelos, further reinforcing their local identity. In addition, he restores old knives, giving them new life while preserving the island’s knife-making heritage.
