The Monastery of Agios Taxiarhis is located in a beautiful pine-covered area near Glossa, on the road to Perivoli Beach. From here, you get a lovely view over the northern side of the island.
Today, the monastery is abandoned, but in the past it was connected to the Xeropotamos Monastery on Mount Athos and was home to many monks.
It is believed that the monastery was built around 1672 and later renovated during the years of Ottoman rule.
Inside the courtyard, you can still see remains of an early Christian church dating back to 672 AD, which shows that this place has been important for many centuries.
Just outside the monastery walls, there is an ossuary (a small building where monks’ bones were kept). South of the monastery, you’ll also find a stone fountain with plenty of fresh water.
